Who we are (history and mission)Yangtze International Study Abroad (YISA) is based in Nanjing, China. We are made up of Chinese and American educators who believe in the long term value of relationships formed between American students and their Chinese counterparts. Founded by former professors and administrators from the University of Arizona, the focus of YISA is to improve U.S.-China relations by educating American and Chinese students with an in-depth understanding of each other's culture, society, economy, government, and language.Studying with YISA will open doors for you - doors into your own way of relating to the world, doors into unique academic opportunities, and doors into professional possibilities that you may not even see before going to China. We want to help you explore all of these pathways to personal growth, and to give you the support in China to allow you to reach your highest potential as an international student. In addition to an intensive Chinese language program, YISA offers courses in Political Science, Public Administration, and Communication that are taught in English. Meet the facultyHenry Tsang, PhD, Program DirectorDr. Henry Tsang is the Program Director of YISA and a faculty member of the Nanjing Normal University. His course, "Global Business Management in China" focuses on current issues and challenges of American corporations entering China and the economic environment that confronts them. Dr. Tsang received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology specializing in the assessment and measurement classroom teaching and student learning. Dr. Tsang served for eight years under the University of Arizona President Peter Likins as the Coordinator for the P-20 Educational Council of Southern Arizona, initiating a series of educational projects and representing the President's Office on multiple campus-wide and State-wide committees on educational reform. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics and East Asian Studies from UA. Dr. Tsang has been the President of the Tong Ren Educational Group, a private school system including a preschool, elementary school, middle/high school, and junior college in Xi'an, China. Professor Andrés D. Oñate, PhD Dr. Andres Oñate is Professor of International Relations and co-Program Director at Yangtze International Study Abroad in Nanjing. He is concurrently an adjunct professor in Political Science and China Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Oñate teaches POL 428 (Chinese Political Theories, Confucius to the Present), POL 445 (The Chinese Revolution), POL 460 (Modern Chinese Foreign Relations), POL 464 (East Asia International Relations), and CHN 483 (Confucianism: The Classical Period). Professor Oñate was a professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Arizona, where he taught for sixteen years. He then joined the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, serving seven years at the U.S. embassy in Beijing. In this capacity, Professor Oñate has visited fifty (50) cities and around 20 provinces in China. Professor Onate retired from the State Department in 1998. Professor Oñate also served in the White House National Security Council, the U.S. Senate, and received a Master's of Science degree from the U.S. National War College.
